Profile

Mr Clough grew up in Melbourne and completed his medical degree at Melbourne University in year 2000.  Whilst attending University he also studied classical singing through the Conservatorium of Music and was involved in amateur musicals including performance of Javert in Les Misérables opposite Simon Gleeson who would go on to perform Jean Valjean professionally in the 2015 Australian tour.  During his medical degree Mr Clough took a full year off to backpack around the world visiting a total of 27 countries including two months working at a mission hospital in Malawi, Southern Africa.  In 2006 he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Health Statistics to aid planning and execution of future research interests.

Whilst training in surgery at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne he developed an interest in minimally invasive surgery.  To explore this further Mr Clough travelled to Queensland to study under Dr Layani, a French surgeon of world renown and one of the busiest bariatric surgeons in the country.  During this time Mr Clough was able to witness first hand the remarkable personal transformation of patients undergoing weight loss surgery and the intriguing technical challenges involved in mastering the procedures.

In the following year Mr Clough undertook a second year of Fellowship at North Shore Hospital in Sydney, performing and assisting in high volume oesophageal and bariatric surgery.  Subsequent to this Mr Clough travelled to the United States to spend time with gastric bypass expert Mal Fobi and George Fielding at NYU in New York.

Mr Clough began practicing bariatric surgery in Melbourne in 2010 offering procedures for public patients through Box Hill Hospital and privately in practice through the Epworth Hospital.  He has published outcomes of the modern procedures through the public system and is on the Editorial board of the prestigious international Obesity Surgery journal to review the validity of new research papers offered for publication, one of only half a dozen Australian surgeons to hold this position.

In 2012 he assisted Harry Frydenberg in performing the first Endobarrier implantations in Australia.

In 2014 he was privileged to be the first surgeon in Melbourne to perform Roux en Y Gastric Bypass surgery using robotic technology and has subsequently published the first robotic bypass series in Australia.

In 2015 he commenced supervising a Fellowship training position in bariatric surgery at Box Hill Hospital and continues to teach and supervise surgical trainees in this challenging field.

In 2016 he performed the first SIPS procedure (loop duodenal switch) in Melbourne and subsequently performed well over 100 cases in the ensuing years.

Mr Clough is one of only a few surgeons in Melbourne to offer this new SIPS procedure, chiefly for revision of sleeve gastrectomy patients who have regained weight.  He has considerable experience in abdominoplasty and arm reduction procedures for patients who have lost substantial weight through their surgery.

Mr Clough is a proud father of three boys and when he not involved with weight loss surgery he enjoys spending time with their sporting commitments, on the golf course or out in the countryside bushwalking, camping or skiing.
